Puerto Santiago

Now for something completely different...Tenerife's west coast is certainly not so well trodden and an area that was steeped in maritime history has now almost abandoned its heritage in favour of the more lucrative tourist industry and Puerto Santiago Tenerife is in the middle of it!

That is not to say the area is commercialised. Far from it. A tiny fishing hamlet, Puerto Santiago has retained its charm, and is a laid back resort that still has a village atmosphere. Central to this development on the west coast, the resorts of Los Gigantes (north) and Playa la Arena (south) now virtually merge with Puerto Santiago and triplets are born! The 3 villages technically exist completely independently, but are frequently considered as one large resort destination. This can only mean good news for the visitor, as three resorts are accessible for Puerto Santiago holidays, albeit separated by small ravines. But the terrain between is quite hilly and is not to be recommended for the less mobile.

The dramatic cliffs in the area dominate the skyline and make for some breathtaking views of the ocean. The best beach is probably at Playa la Arena where the volcanic sands and crystal waters have been consistently awarded the Blue Flag since 1989 - a great achievement for a Tenerife resort.

This little cluster of resorts clinging to the coast are worlds away from the thrumming beat of Playa de las Americas, but they have their own charm, laid back pace of life and enough bars, cafes and restaurants to enjoy quiet and relaxed evenings. Proximity to Mount Teide and the National Park is a major attraction in the area, a natural reserve with some of the loveliest scenery on the island.
