Located on the island's western coast, almost midway down its skinny flank, this was once a fairly isolated, although very pretty resort because most of the action on Corfu seemed to focus on the eastern side. However, these days, the real natural beauty of Paleokastritsa has finally been recognised and it is both a popular and truly delightful holiday destination.
Paleokastritsa is extremely picturesque and it lies in a sheltered bay of sparkling turquoise waters where languid swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving are the lazy pastimes of the day. A swift trip on a local pedalo is almost considered too energetic!
Holidays in Paleokastritsa are perfect for relaxation as the area boasts no less than 7 fine beaches - some isolated and accessible only by boat; some fun and busy and full of cafes and tavernas and some again which are purely breathtaking with gorgeous views and crystal waters for sailing and kayaking.
Watersports are not a huge draw in the area as Paleokastritsa is more a centre for scubadiving and snorkelling due to the clean and clear waters, rich in marine life.
The tiny monastery of Theotokos is an iconic landmark and a holiday to Paleokastritsa is not complete without a stroll to the top of the hill to visit the dazzling whitewashed buildings, laden with stunning apricot-hued and raspberry coloured bougainvillea and scarlet hibiscus. The peace here comes dropping slow and a sense of wellbeing is experienced.
A holiday to Paleokastritsa is recommended for de-stressing and unwinding in an area of fantastic natural beauty. Golden sandy beaches, azure waters, rocky outcrops, dark green and silver olive groves and icing sugar white houses with crimson blooms stretch over the attractive terrain. Nightlife can be hectic or laid back as the odd nightclub vies with the friendly tavernas serving delicious Greek specialities.
All in all though, a holiday in Paleokastritsa is an exercise in relaxing enjoyment and is recommended for sheer pleasure. Even a couple of days spent in Paleokastritsa feels like a detox for the soul!
Aer Lingus operates regular direct flights from Dublin to Corfu and we have a selection of holiday accommodation in the resort and on the island of Corfu.
