Cosily situated almost midway between Chania and Rethymnon on Crete's northwest coast, this delightful little resort offers an experience of Crete from times past that now sit comfortably in the modern day.
Lots of old fashioned Greek charm is a huge factor in Georgioupolis holidays where a 1.4k stretch of soft sand shingle beach slopes into the blue waters of the Mediterranean. A local river flowing through the resort, the Alymros, has a bird sanctuary on its tiny lake, before it joins the sea and the pretty harbour has brightly coloured fishing caiques and pleasure craft moored along its walls.
The village of Georgioupolis has blossomed from a modest local hamlet where nothing of great consequence ever happened and which just snoozed lazily in the midday sun. Today, this busy little resort fairly bustles in the summer months. The main square in the village is extremely attractive and the traditional tavernas and atmospheric cafeneions chalk their daily specials on blackboards and lure you to their terraces for cool drinks or delicious mezes. Shaded by leafy eucalyptus trees, imagine spending a few hours people watching here on a hot summer's day.... Pure bliss.
Narrow streets where the local houses squeeze into one another offer plenty of kiosks and tourist shops along the way, but make time to have coffee in the square, admire the local scenery and simply relax on your holiday in Georgioupolis. This delightful resort will lull you into the most marvellous laid back, friendly zone where tranquillity is a given.
Georgioupolis has bars and tavernas and restaurants, so there are good nightlife options, but the resort is essentially relaxing and fairly quiet and has not bowed to the pressure for trendy nightclubs or strobe-lit discos, so don't choose a holiday in Georgioupolis if you need crazy clubs and all night music venues. Couples and families enjoy the resort as everything is pretty much low key and the pleasure centres around the lovely climate, great beach and friendly locals.
Lovely landscapes with picturesque villages surround Georgioupolis but the iconic landmark is the teeny Chapel of Agios Nikolaos, precariously built on a rock jetty at the end of the village harbour - one of the most photographed sights in the resort. Just 4k east of Georgioupolis, the beautiful beach at Kavros is a golden swathe of silky sand.
The whole area is steeped in history and culture and day trips to Chania and Rethymnon with their lovely harbours and fortified walls are real Greek treasures. Enjoy a holiday to Georgioupolis where a nod to the modern day is acknowledged and you can feel a shuffle into this century, but believe me, there has been no rush and the pace is unhurried and the livin' is most definitely easy!
There are no flights to Georgioupolis, but there are direct flights from Ireland to nearby Chania airport and we have a selection of hotels in the area.
