Located on the southern coast of Portugal on the eastern Algarve, Monte Gordo is a gorgeous town which is very close to the Spanish border (only 5km away), so this is a Portuguese holiday destination with a touch of Spain thrown in for good measure! The area is completely flat, so is perfect for walking, strolling the promenade on a balmy evening.
Monte Gordo has a superb beach - long, flat and sandy and even proudly claimed to be the largest beach in all Algarve. The waters surrounding Monte Gordo also claim to be the warmest in the Mediterranean - a real winter warmer! Fronted by an attractive promenade, this is pure bliss for evening "rambling" and people watching. Stop for a cooling drink in one of the bars which line the walkway and maybe choose your waterfront restaurant for later. Pretty palm trees are interspersed along the beach side and the other side is lined with bars, coffee shops and great restaurants. The usual array of water-based activities is on offer and there are some top class golf courses close by, so no excuse to be lazy!
The town of Monte Gordo is quite large and is beautifully laid out with spacious public areas and wide streets. The resort is thoughtfully planned and is much favoured by local Portuguese for their own holidays (always a good sign!). A Monte Gordo holiday has the benefit of lots of local flavour. The town definitely has a "lived in" feel all year round and the welcome for visitors is genuine. Ideally, and unlike many other resorts, Monte Gordo is alive and thriving throughout the year and the atmosphere is a perfect blend of traditional and modern.
A holiday in Monte Gordo is easily accessible and highly enjoyable. Typical, laid back and certainly not frenetic, nightlife is usually centred round the delightful restaurants and local bars. Discover family-run restaurants where the freshest fish and local specialities are served; wander in the wide variety of shops or explore the atmospheric side streets. Relax, chill out and totally fall in love on your Monte Gordo holiday!
